Solar panels in San Javier: what foreign homeowners need to know

San Javier’s ordinances are generous on the one-off tax (ICIO) and short on the annual one (IBI): the IBI bonus applies only to the first tax period after installation.

Council tax discounts in San Javier

Spanish councils may reduce two taxes for solar self-consumption: the IBI (Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles, the annual property tax, by up to 50% under national law) and the ICIO (Impuesto sobre Construcciones, Instalaciones y Obras, paid once on the works, by up to 95%). Both are optional for each council, which is why the figures differ from town to town. Our comparison of 21 cities (in Spanish) shows how widely they vary.

How much a system produces in San Javier

PVGIS, the free tool of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, gives 1,661 kWh per year for each kWp installed at San Javier town (37.806, -0.843), with panels facing south at the optimal tilt (35°), 14% system losses and 2125 kWh/m² of yearly irradiation on the panels. A 5 kWp system would therefore produce roughly 8,305 kWh a year. A roof that does not face south, or that is shaded, will produce less: your installer should model your actual roof.

Licence and paperwork in San Javier

The IBI bonus requires proof that a municipal licence was requested and granted. Ask your installer to put the licence reference in the file they hand you.

The steps that are the same everywhere in Spain (registering the installation, the surplus-energy contract, what changes on your bill) are explained in our guide to solar panels in Spain for foreign homeowners.

Particularities for San Javier

Santiago de la Ribera, Roda, Pozo Aledo and the municipal stretch of La Manga are inside the municipality and follow the same ordinances.
