Solar panels in Mazarrón: what foreign homeowners need to know

Mazarrón is a good example of why you should not trust a figure from an older website: the council rewrote its IBI ordinance for 2026, so the figures below come from the new text in the regional gazette, not from older guides.

How reliable is this page? IBI read from the full text published in the Region of Murcia official gazette (BORM no. 294, 22 December 2025, in force 1 January 2026). The ICIO text is the consolidated version on the council website (see below).

Council tax discounts in Mazarrón

Spanish councils may reduce two taxes for solar self-consumption: the IBI (Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles, the annual property tax, by up to 50% under national law) and the ICIO (Impuesto sobre Construcciones, Instalaciones y Obras, paid once on the works, by up to 95%). Both are optional for each council, which is why the figures differ from town to town. Our comparison of 21 cities (in Spanish) shows how widely they vary.

How much a system produces in Mazarrón

PVGIS, the free tool of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, gives 1,661 kWh per year for each kWp installed at Mazarrón town (37.599, -1.315), with panels facing south at the optimal tilt (35°), 14% system losses and 2113 kWh/m² of yearly irradiation on the panels. A 5 kWp system would therefore produce roughly 8,305 kWh a year. A roof that does not face south, or that is shaded, will produce less: your installer should model your actual roof.

Licence and paperwork in Mazarrón

Request the IBI bonus before the tax accrues (on 1 January) and keep the installer’s certificate showing the date of installation: the ordinance requires it.

The steps that are the same everywhere in Spain (registering the installation, the surplus-energy contract, what changes on your bill) are explained in our guide to solar panels in Spain for foreign homeowners.

Particularities for Mazarrón

Camposol is a large residential area of villas, many owned by foreign residents. Check whether your plot sits within a residents’ community or an urbanisation association with rules about roofs before you sign a contract.

The “sized to cover all the needs of the dwelling” wording is unusual. Ask your installer to document the consumption they used for sizing, in case the council asks for it.

Camposol, Puerto de Mazarrón, Bolnuevo and Mazarrón town are all inside the municipality and follow the same ordinances.
